Screen Door Installation and Sliding screen door replacement

The first step in screen door installation is usually the actual screen door removal. This page will give you basic screen door installation and replacement techniques for the three most common patio door installations that the homeowner is likely to encounter. Read these carefully, in some types of screen door installation you can damage the patio door if the sliding screen door replacement is not done properly.

There are more types of doors than described here. If you need specific information about sliding screen door replacement, please don’t hesitate to send me a message using the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Screen door installation or removal if your screen door is on the outside

These are the simplest type of screen door installation and removal. Here the screen door is on the outside and is easy to get at. More than likely, the screen door will have two rollers or plastic glides at the bottom and two at the top which will have to be loosened so that they don’t break when the door is removed.

Usually there is some kind of adjustment screw at the edges of the door or sticking up above the roller. Loosen it until the roller moves in and the door becomes noticeably easier to move up and down. Lift the screen door up slightly, you should see the bottom rollers or wheels just poking out the bottom of the screen door. Take a flat blade screwdriver and slide it underneath the spring loaded rollers and gently lift them up. Carefully pry the bottom edge of the door and the roller out over top of the screen door track where the rollers glide. Lift the entire screen door frame up and out of the bottom screen door track.

Once you have the screen door out, check the rollers to make sure all of them roll easily and adjust properly. Some screen door rollers require that the frame taken apart before they can be removed. Better to know that now than after you have completed your sliding screen door replacement job.

Screen door installation involves doing all of the above steps in reverse order. To reinstall, start by installing the door in the center of the patio door. Get the rollers on top of the screen door onto their track. Then push the door back to the vertical position. Dont force the bottom rollers on to the bottom track. Use a flat screwdriver to gently pry them over and onto their track. Then adjust the rollers to raise the door. Adjust the rollers untill the vertical bar with the screen door handle is perfectly parallel to the vertical patio door frame on the lock side.

Screen door installation when your screen is top hung.

A top hung screen door has two rollers or glides at the top that ride in a track at the top of the patio door. They are similar to the closet doors you see in a lot of high rise apartments and condominiums. Pocket doors often work this way too.

You will have to loosen screws holding rollers on to the top track. After you loosen them, the door will drop down and you should be able to lift the door and unhook the rollers from the top track. Usually the door will move up and down enough to easily swing out the bottom of the door from the bottom track. Swinging the door out from the bottom often helps unhook the top rollers from the top track. You may have to completely remove the screws holding the top rollers to get this kind of door out.

The top rollers on these types of screen doors are often poorly made and will break easily. Fortunately they can often be replaced without having to take the screen door frame apart.

Vinyl Sliding Doors Made Easy
To reinstall the screen door install the top rollers back onto the top of the screen door but don’t tighten the screws very much. Hold the screen door so that you can slide the top of the screen door into the top track and try to get the top rollers to hook on to the track inside the top of the patio door frame. Adjust the top rollers after you have successfully hung the door in place. Use a flat blade screwdriver beneath the bottom rollers and gently let them snap onto the bottom track. Old nylon rollers break easily. The bottom rollers in these doors are often just spring loaded so you most likely wont need to adjust them. All the rolling and alignment is controlled by the top rollers.

How to install a screen door if your screen door is between the glass panels.

This type of patio door can be the most difficult to remove a screen door from. But the good thing is Screen doors in between glass panels and on the inside are protected from the weather. They can potentially last longer than those mounted on the outside. A common problem with screens in between patio door glass panels is that, over time, settling of the wooden house frame causes the aluminum or wood patio door frame to bend and warp. This can make removing the glass panels or the screen door very difficult.

If you have noticed that your glass or screen doors don’t slide back and forth easily, you might have a sagging door frame. Look up at the space between the top of the sliding glass door panel and the top track. Check the gap as you slide the door all the way open and all the way closed. There should be enough space for the door to open easily across the entire width of its travel without rubbing on the top track.

If you see any evidence of scrape marks, or can clearly see scratches where the door rubs on the top frame, you know you have settling problems with the frame of your house. Settling problems will wear out your sliding glass door rollers. It will also make the doors difficult to slide open and in the worst cases can shatter the door glass from the pressure of the sagging frame.

How to install a screen door if there is only a small amount of settling.

First remove all the clamps and screws securing the glass doors. Some screws may be hidden so don’t try to force anything until you sure all the fasteners are removed. It should be possible to slide each glass panel to the side, lift it up and swing the bottom of the glass door out over the bottom track. A small pry bar can be useful if the bottom of the door so long as only a small amount of force is used. Don’t break the glass!

Sometimes there is not enough room to lift the door up. You may need to use a jack to raise the door frame slightly. I use a small hydraulic jack with a 2 x 4 long enough to reach the top of the door. Jack up the door frame no more than ¼”. Any more and you risk damaging the door frame. You should gain enough extra height to allow you lift out the door panel. If you cant lift the door out with the aid of a jack it’s really time to replace your patio door.

Sometimes you can repair your sagging patio door by removing the wooden casing on the inside of the patio door and removing the wooden shims that usually space the patio door from the wooden framing. Sadly sometimes the wooden frame sags so much that even this wont help.

If you are able to remove the glass panels then you should be able to remove the screen door in the same manner. You just have to loosen all four screen door rollers as I described in the section about removing a screen door when its mounted on the outside.

When you have gone to all this trouble to get your screen door out, its definitely a good idea to check your screen door and patio rollers while you have everything out. Nothing worse than getting a center run screen door back in and finding it wont slide because of a broken roller.

How to install a screen door if the screen door is on the inside

Screen doors on the inside usually have four rollers, two on top and two on the bottom. Make sure the adjustment screws are loosened, not removed !, on some models you wont be able to put them back in without reassembling the whole door ! Look carefully at the bottom screen door track. There is often two notches which match the shape of the bottom roller. Line the door roller up with this bottom notch and the screen door will pull out from the bottom easily. Handle the door with care. Interior screen doors often have fragile wood frames and trim. To reinstall the door after repair, reverse the procedure and line up the bottom roller with the notch to get it back in. Tighten the adjustment screws to get the door to run freely.

How to install a screen door and get the door to slide easily.

Screen doors have rollers and glides and they don’t last forever, they do wear out. Make sure if you are repairing the screen to check the rollers. Rollers are often made of nylon and with time nylon gets brittle and breaks very easily. Usually as you are in the middle of reinstalling the freshly screened door! Have the rollers checked and replaced if your door is more than 5 years old and needs rescreening. Many rollers require the screen frame to be completely disassembled to be installed. If you are lucky, you may find suitable rollers at your local home improvement center or glass shop.

With the door reinstalled, screw in the adjustment screws until each roller lifts the screen door up off the track. Usually 1/8” is all that’s needed. Adjust both bottom rollers so that the door closes squarely in the frame. Adjust the lock if there is one. You may need to adjust the position of the lock hasp to get the screen door lock to function again.
