Wood Screen Doors

Many people like the look of wood screen doors. They are available in a wide range of styles which can really set the front entrance of your house apart from all the others on the street. Wooden doors need to be cared for though and this page will lay out some care and maintenance tips that will keep your wooden door looking new for a long time.

The first thing to consider is keeping your wood storm door in storage in the garage or shed in the winter. No matter how good the carpentry, or how tight the joinery, weather will get into the door. So put removable hinges on the door so you can take it off in the winter months. Your regular steel house doors are built for the snow & slush. Save the wooden door for the nicer months.

Make sure you buy a wooden door with removable screens, not screens that are stapled into the door and covered with wood moulding. You are going to be replacing these screens a few times so make sure they can be easily removed and taken to the screen shop. If you are in the process of buying the door, get the manufacturer to give you some extra screen clips. Quite often these will get lost as the door gets used so its handy to have extra available for replacement.

Another consideration is a modern door sweep. Leave a gap at the bottom of the door so you can install a modern door sweep. The sweep will keep the wet leaves and moisture off the bottom of the wooden door so it does not start to rot. The sweep can easily be replaced as it gets worn.
