Looking for fireproof screen material

Hi,

I just added tiles in my kitchen with a beautiful painted tile picture behind my stove top. I am looking for something that I can roll down with a screen so that when I am cooking it doesn't splatter on the picture. Any ideas?

I was thinking of something like a splatter screen but I can't seem to find where to find a roll of that type of screen. Obviously it needs to be fireproof. Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

Rhonda

Hi Rhonda;

Sounds to me that the simplest solution would be a custom made roller blind say about 30 inches wide with solar sunshade material.

Screen cloth sold in North America usually has to be "Fire-rated" according to your local building codes. That means if you hold a flame to it, it takes 20 minutes before it catches fire.

Fireproof is going to be tricky because materials that wont burn at all are extremely expensive. These would be things like Kevlar and Nomex.

Check with local window blind companies and even the window blind department at Lowes or Home Depot. A standard blind cut to width should be ok for this.

A good manufacturer such as Hunter-Douglas or Levelor should be able to provide proof that the material is fire rated and will tell you how long it is rated for.

Hope this helps

Does pet screen block your view?

I am considering storm windows with pet screen but I am concerned that the pet screen might interfere with my view. Do pet screen have an effect on a persons ability to see through the screen?
Also, is there a vendor that manufactures window screens with the pet screen already installed?

Petscreen is thicker than regular screen so it does block more light, but it also blocks more solar UV radiation.

Your local glass shop should be able to make screen frames for you with Petscreen installed. Its something best done locally as completed screens can easily get damaged in shipping.

Fiberglass Screen Used for Craft

by Linda
(Florida)

I have recently started using fine fiberglass screening for needlepoint since it has fine small holes, is easily purchased and is cheap. It occurs to me to ask, does using fiberglass product like this create a health risk?

I have it in by hands, rolling and handling it, also a needle and thread in and out of the mesh. I frequently experiment with odd materials like this. Any information as to the 'fiberglass' affect on me would be helpful.

I dont know of any health risks from handling fibrglass screening. Most north american screen mesh is made from fiberglass yarn with a fire retardant plastic coating.

Best screen material to cover a pool

by Mark
(Waterdown, Ontario, Canada)

Hi there: I am looking for a grade of screen to cover my rectangular pool 16' x 26' to keep out the seeds in the spring and the leaves in the fall. I was thinking of a door screen grade would be good but not sure I could get it at that size. Any help would be appreciated.
All the best.
Mark

Hi Mark;

There are grades of screen cloth specially make for pools and patio enclosures. They have a slightly thicker wire diameter than is used in patio door screens and windows.

Rolls are available up to 120 inches wide x 100 feet long. I think that 84 inch wide is the limit that UPS Ground will ship though.

Nosee umm screen vs regular screen in a windy area

I will soon be building a three sided screened porch at my cottage. The cottage is on the very windy Lake Ontario. I would like to use the fine nosee umm screen but I am unsure if it would work in such a windy environment. I am afraid the fine screen would act like a wall in the wind. Do you have any advice. I plan on having aluminium frames as you recommend and will take them out for the winter.

Thanks Patricia

What is the most transparent screen?

by Laura
(Warsaw, IN)

I need to replace window screens. I want to be able to push the TV up to the window and watch the tv through the screen from the deck at night. So the most transparent is the best for us. Kids and dogs are not really an issue, but it does get hard afternoon sun. Do they make clear screens?

Hi Laura; Black aluminum wire is the most invisible screen material. It's the one most people end up walking through ! You should be able to see the TV through most screen materials at night, except perhaps PetScreen and Solar Screen as they are much thicker.

85 Year Bronze Screens need repair

by Mark

We are working on an 85 year old house. it has 4 screen doors that look like they are made of copper.( Maybe bronze ? )

The Screen & Spline are to. The screen is pinched into the spline. The groove is just a little smaller than a cigarette.

Will we be able to replace this with fiberglass screen & new spline ? It really breaks my heart to do this, they also want me to paint them black. It should be illegal

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the great pictures !

The old screen cloth is bronze and is still available. The spline can be replaced most likely with 1/4" diameter polyfoam spline.

The same spline will work with Fiberglass too but you will need to test it first to make sure 1/4" holds the fiberglass cloth tightly enough.

Let me know how much screen cloth and spline you need and I will get you a price.

Using fiberglass screen for straining fruit juices...a health risk?

Can using fiberglass screens for straining juices be a health risk?...If so, why?

I dont know about a health risk, but I dont think it would last too long with acidic juices going through it. Washing in hot water or hte dishwasher would not be good for it either.

Stainless steel mesh would be much better, easier to clean and much longer lasting.

Screens for use in a windy area

by Christine
(West Richland, Washington)

We live in a home in West Richland Washington. We moved our family which includes four cats, who love the outside but would not have a long life span due to the very rugged vibe of the area.

We have at least eight families of hawks, owls, and eagles which feed in our woods and prairies only 200 feet away. We also have rattle snakes nestled in the pond behind us and coyotes which troll through our neighborhood on their way to the undeveloped land just across the street.

Our solution was to make a make-shift sun room using a gazebo kit and rolls of screen and pvc lattice from the local Home Depot. The problem is the wind. It can gust over 80 mph and we have about three wind seasons a year.

Early spring, Fall, and some doozy summer forces. The cats love their sun room. They go out all day in the summer and feel safe and enjoy the voices of nature. We want to keep them safe.

I would like to send pictures of our sunroom so you can advise on how to make the screens more wind resistant, so my husband is not constantly patching the screens.

Thanks,
Christine

It would be great if you could post a picture here so I could see how the screens have been installed.

There is thicker screen material intended specifically for screen porches and also petscreen and solar screen materials that can withstand higher wind loads than the standard window screening you might find in the hardware store.

If you need to email me send pictures to adrian@aaadrafting.com
