Vinyl windows vs aluminum windows

Vinyl windows vs aluminum windows

  • Aluminum windows are stronger than vinyl and can withstand greater wind loading, that's why they are used in so many high rise apartments.
  • Vinyl windows offer better insulation against heat transfer. Aluminum conducts heat. Most aluminum windows nowadays are "thermally broken" by sandwiching the outside and inside of the window around a plastic divider or "thermal break".
  • Aluminum windows are more durable and repairable. Glass can be easily removed from an aluminum window when it gets broken. There are still vinyl windows and vinyl patio doors on the market that are glued together. If the glass ever gets broken, the whole sash has to be replaced which is more expensive than a glass repair.
  • Vinyl windows can be fragile. Vinyl is a soft plastic and will bend easily. When the the vinyl is thin, it can easily be broken. It is also less secure when used as a patio door. A thief can break in through a vinyl patio door more easily than an aluminum door.
