Where to get a top hung patio screen door
by Frank
(Austin, Texas )
I have a patio door that needs a new screen door. I have looked at Lowes, and Home Depot.
It is a top hung screen patio door, (Circa 1978)
36 X 79 1/2
Do you know where I could purchase one?
Thanks

Making a top hung screen door
by Paul
(Sacramento, CA, USA)
Top Hung Roller #1
Top Hung Roller #2
Top Hung Roller #3
The sliding screens on my patio (the house is about 20 years old) are the sliders that hang at the top and use the track at the bottom.
At the home improvement stores the only kind of replacement screen doors I can find are designed to use a track at the top and not hang. These just don't seem to install well in the type of door frame I have.
Can I modify the new screen doors I find in stores with some type of hardware to convert them to the hanging type?
Any other suggestions also would be appreciated. Just rescreening is not an option because the screen door frames need to be replaced.
Thx. --Paul
Hi Paul;
You have whats called a top hung door and there are a few different ways the rollers are attached to these doors.
You can modify a standard screen door to a top hang style if you get the right rollers to suit your style of top rail.
A lot depends on where the roller is in relation to the top of the screen door. Is it in front or behind the outside of the screen door.
How far does it stick in or behind the outside of the screen door. Once you have figured out that dimension, you can pick out a roller that will end up in the same position.

what kind of screen door?

I need a screen door like this but cant find one. Do you know who makes them or what they are called?
Thanks Travis, Thats a "top hung" style of screen door but my rail has an extension on the front, not on the back like yours.
You could use one of my screen door kits with 2 of the rollers shown in the picture to take the place of the long rail with the rollers mounted on it.
We would need to check the dimensions to be absolutely sure.
