Three Sided Patio Screen Rooms

Adding three sided patio screen rooms to your house can maximize the enjoyment you get out of your patio space. Many houses already have overhanging porch roofs that make it easy to install a screen room. Other homes have porches that may have been erected by the builder but not screened. Putting the screens on can change the whole character of the room. Make sure you have a flat concrete floor or pad before you begin. You need a solid base to build anything on.

Aluminum Framed Screen Rooms

Traditionally three sided patio screen rooms are built using pressure treated 4x4 posts and 2x4's. The Screen cloth would be stapled to 1x1 cleats all around the openings. Nowadays we have the option of using strong extruded aluminum framing that matches the existing aluminum siding, soffit and fascia used in many front porches. The framing is the same material thats used for high end sliding screen doors. Apart from matching the aluminum in the front of your house, the framework makes the screen porch much easier to install and repair. Its also easy to install sliding screen doors to enter and exiti the porch since the exact same material is being used.

The house shown in the pictures has a three sided porch with a sliding screen door installed. Notice how large the openings are for the screens. The openings are not blocked by thick wooden posts. The framework is also barely noticeable.

Existing Brick or Steel Support Columns

The house shown in the pictures has a builder installed porch with brick and steel support columns. The steel columns have been trimmed out in to provide a flat base to install the screen porch frame work on. Normally you would have to frame out the openings in 2x4 pressure treated wood with 1x1 cleats to support the screen material. Here The aluminum screen framing is simply screwed right onto the columns. Then the screening is rolled into the framing. The installation is very simple and future screen repairs are easy to do as well.

Three Sided Patio Screen Rooms 002The picture showing the inside shows how the screening really makes the space feel more like a room than an outside patio. Even though the only thing seperating the room from the outside is the thin screen material. The framing does not intrude into the view and the widest available screen material can be used.
