Shower Door Hinge

Nowadays the shower door hinge and 3/8" plate glass glass shower doors are everywhere. Whatever happened to shower curtains and little plastic hooks ? If you are going to be hanging a heavy plate glass door, you are going to need a substantial hinge. So lets take a look at what makes a good shower door hinge

For corrosion resistance, the shower door hinge must be made of solid brass or stainless steel or a combination of the two. You also need stainless steel screws to match the rust resistance of the hinge. These screws definitely have to screw into solid wood when hanging a heavy glass door, so make sure your new shower enclosure has enough wood framing in the area where the hinges will be used.

The Picture below is a CRL Geneva adjustable series hinge which is made for 5/16 to 1/2 inch (8 to 12 millimeter) tempered safety glass. Tempered glass this thick is extremely strong and safe for bathroom applications. The hinge pictured on the left is a Wall Mount and the hinge pictured on the right is the same model except used to join Glass-to-Glass.

Adjustment to accommodate the angle desired (up to 90 degrees) is done after the door is installed. Once the door is hung, simply loosen the allen screws and turn the door to the desired closed position. By merely tightening the allen screws, your door will close precisely to 0 degrees. The door can swing 90 degrees inward and also 90 degrees outward (adjusting angle from factory set position will reduce 90 degree swing in that direction). For doors pulling outwards only (using a clear door jamb), you can adjust the hinge to close 5 degree inside the shower area, thus having the door close snugly against the jamb.
