Screen Door Hardware

Screen door hardware is pretty easy to replace so long as you can find the right parts. This page has been put together to help you figure out just what kind of screen door hardware you need to maintain your screen door. The hardware discussed here is used on sliding screen doors.

Screen doors don't have many parts. Basically there is just a frame made up of two vertical rails and two horizontal rails. The rails are often held together with 4 friction fit corners. There may be 2 or 4 rollers and sometimes 2 nylon guides. The corners are frequently made to hold the rollers as well. Lastly there is a handle for the screen door. Quite often the vertical rails are made with fins which work as an outside handle, so a handle is only needed on the inside

Starting with handles, these items will fit almost any screen door. So if you need a replacement handle, it shouldn't matter which handle you buy so long as it is made for a screen door. There are some fancy handles which slide in grooves in the vertical screen door rails but even these can be retrofitted with different types of screen door handle

The corners in a screen door are often made by a variety of manufacturers but many of them share the same dimensions. You can often switch one manufacturers corner for another so long as the dimensions are the same.

The rollers are the only part that has a really big variety of shapes and sizes. But again, many doors can be retrofitted with another manufacturers rollers. Many original screen door rollers are poorly made to begin with. Thats the reason they break. My own preference is to find replacement steel ball bearing rollers where possible. These generally roll really well and last a long time. Some brand new nylon rollers don't even roll well right out of the package so they often are not worth installing on an existing door.
