Retractable Window Screens

Retractable window screens can be a practical solution if you have no screens on your windows. These screens work just the same way as roller window blinds. The only real difference are the 2 tracks on either side of the screen to guide the screen material up and down and keep it nice and flat. Usually there is a magnetic catch at the bottom to keep the screen in the closed position.

Retractable screens generally are made to order specifically for your window size. To mount the screen you need a flat area all around your existing window that can be covered by the screen. You need room to screw the screens roller up at the top and room to mount the side rails which run from the top of the window all the way to the bottom.

You will need to consider the locations of lever and cranks that control the window so you can be sure the screen will close properly without bumping into anything. On some casement style windows it may be possible to install the screen so that it stops just above the window crank and out of the way of the window locks on the left or right hand sides. In this way it will be possible to open and close the window without having to touch the screen.

As with all retractable screens, you need to know what the manufacturers repair policy is because most of these screens cant be repaired easily by the homeowner. If theres a rip in the screen, the manufacturer will often just change the whole roller assembly. It might be worth trying to get an extra roller assembly especially if you are buying several retractable screens of the same size. Having a spare roller will allow you to repair a broken screen yourself.
