Retractable Door Screen
A retractable door screen works just like a roller window blind. Typically, when these are used on doors, the roller is mounted on the door jamb to the left or the right. The screen can then be pulled out from whichever side it is mounted on and latched on the opposite side to keep it closed. Window retractable screens usually have the roller at the top, so the screen closes from top to bottom, although the side mounted roller position, can be used on window installations, if necessary.A Retractable door screens can be installed fairly easily by the homeowner provided the installation does not present any special problems. The most important detail is that a retractable screen door needs a flat area to be installed on. You cant install it if the top of your door frame sits proud of the side jambs, or if the door sill is behind or in front of the side jambs. At least not without adding cleats or sill adapters. Screen repair is also something to consider if your are having a retractable screen installed. You cant repair the screen yourself like you can with a regular screen door. You generally have to take the whole door back to the manufacturer for re-screening. They usually just replace the whole roller assembly. If possible, its a good idea to buy yourself an extra roller assembly if you are having multiple doors installed that are the same size. Retractable screens can be installed on all sorts of doors but sometimes the modifications necessary to adapt them to the intended door can be more trouble and expense than worthwhile. Make sure when the screen is used it does not interfere with door handles and latches. Some door handles will stick out far enough to poke right through the screen.
