Pet Proof Screen

Pet proof screen material looks a lot like regular fiberglass screening except that it is a lot thicker. The extra thickness gives it the ability to stand up to dogs and cats scratching it. Pet proof screen started out as a luggage container fabric but was found to be a great solution to pets scratching at the patio door screen to get in and get out. Its not impossible to damage pet screening, but its at least 10 times stronger than regular fiberglass screening

If you have never worked with pet proof screen before, it might be a good idea to let the glass shop install it because the stiffness of the material, makes it a little hard to work with. If you are careful, it is not an impossible project for a do-it-yourselfer to do.

The first thing to watch out for is that you wont be able to roll in the old spline you took out of your old patio door screen. The thick petscreen means you have to use a screen spline a couple of sizes smaller so that you can roll the material into the spline channel properly.

Petscreen is best installed with a screen roller. Poking it into the channel with a screwdriver blade will just be too much of a chore. Its best to clamp the screen cloth on all around the frame with lots of spring clamps and then pre-roll one edge into the channel before rolling the spline in. The petscreen is so stiff, it will stay in the channel. Pre-rolling helps get the material square and flat in the frame. You can also pull the material out once or twice incase it does not go in straight.

Once you have the material rolled in, you will need a utility knife with a fresh sharp blade. Cut away the excess petscreen being really careful not to cut into the screen you have just rolled in. Petscreen is tough to cut so keep a good grip on the knife and go slowly and carefully. Pull out the cutoff material as you go to make sure its cut right through.

These rolls of pet proof screening are made to re-screen 1 patio door screen. The 84" length will suit the majority of patio doors screen heights. This tough pet screen is made in 2 widths. The 36" width will fit most patio doors and the 48" will help with some of the extra width screen doors

Pet screen is not indestructible. It can still be pushed out of the frame by a big dog speeding through the screen door. No matter how strong the mesh is, its still no stronger than the spline holding it in the spline channel. But with petscreen you can often roll it right back in again if it gets pushed out. It does not rip that easily as regular fiberglass screening would.Click the Pet Proof Screen link to get back to the home page
