Patio Door Drapes

Finding patio door drapes is first and foremost a matter of personal taste. As someone who has repaired many patio doors I feel I'm in a good position to at least advise on the pro's and con's of each window treatment, so I shall try to do that here. Along the way I shall try to give some examples of some nice curtain setups.

Curtains Blowing in the Wind

Many patio door drapes have side panel curtains on the left and right of the door. Although this looks nice, one of the things that always happens is the panels get sucked out the door on a windy day. This can ruin a nice set of drapes especially if they get snagged on something. Even having the drapes touching the screen door can make them very dirty very quickly. If you are planning this sort of arrangement, try to have the side panels attached to the wall at the top , middle and bottom so they cant get blown out the door.

The Short Valance

With a patio door you can do a lot with using decorative valences across the top of the door. The valence hides the curtain rods, or the workings of the blinds and lends a lot of style to the door without necessarily costing a lot of money. You can even build your own valences out of 1/4" plywood with the material of your choice stapled over. A good strong valence base also makes a great place to attach curtain rods to. Just make sure you attach the valence strongly so that its able to hold its own weight and the weight of the curtains. The valence does not have to be very wide, and if its solid make sure its higher than the heads of the people that have to pass under it.

Choose a Theme for each room

Without going to a huge amount of trouble you can use drapes to mimic a whole different style of house. The drapes below look like they belong in a viennese castle or a french chateau but really would look just the same covering a patio door or french door. Just keep the theme going for the entire room.
