Glass drill bit
A glass drill bit or a Diamond bit is what you need to drill hard, brittle materials like glass, ceramics and tile. They are called "diamond" bits because they have tiny shards of industrial diamonds impregnated into their cutting edges. Because diamonds are natures hardest known substance, they can cut glass, tile and many types of stone. They come in many different styles to suit the type of job you want to do. The cost of diamond bits is based on the quality of the industrial diamonds they are made with. Expensive diamond drill bits use the highest quality diamonds and will last for many uses before they need to be replaced. Small holes can be made using a round ball shaped drill bits. Holes that are 1/2" diameter and larger require a diamond core bit. These bits look like hollow metal cylinders with drill shanks sticking out the top. Coarse Diamond bits will leave a better finish than twist drills because they grind the material away finely. They also wont crack and chip the workpiece. Start drilling slowly. The larger the bit, the slower you should drill. Once the bit has the hole started you can speed up a little. Always check how hot the bit is getting. Drilling faster increases friction, burns up the bit and makes drill tips develop yellow, brown, blue or black “burn marks”. One way to keep heat in check is to use lubrication. The more coolant you use, the faster you can drill. Ebay is a great place to look for glass drils, here are some of the latest listings for diamonds drills.
