Doggy Door

The doggy door has been around a long time. The first doggy doors were little more than wooden or metal flaps that a dog or cat could push open if they wanted to get outside. There was not much concern for keeping other pets or critters out and the early dog doors didnt keep the weather out too well.

Modern Pet Doors

Nowadays the same advances in weatherstripping and sealing we see used on our new windows are also being used on the lowly pet door. The result is a door that can seal as well as any modern window, and still allow the pet to come and go. There are even locks and fancy electronic pet doors to keep unwanted animals and intruders out.

All this comes at a price of course but many of us will do anything to keep our pets happy and our well sealed houses warm & cosy.

The most logical place for a dog door is a wooden rear entrance door. A hole can easily be cut in a wooden door to allow a dog door to be installed. The frame is designed to be placed together like a sandwich on both sides of the wooden door. The dog door is then secured with screws.

The dog door can also be installed in a brick wall but this requires more planning in installation. You have to cut a rectangular hole in the brick wall of your house, most likely with a rented gasoline concrete saw. The cut hole cant be in the way of existing plumbing or services so you need to open the drywall to be sure the hole location wont interfere with anything. New wooden blocking needs to installed on the interior to allow the dog door to be properly mounted. Then all the drywall has to be replaced.

I have provided a list of links below to doggie doors selling on EBay as this is often a great way to get good deals on pet doors
