Do It Yourself Patio Enclosure

A do it yourself patio enclosure built using heavy duty extruded porch screen bars is not difficult to build. If you have the an existing screen porch, its just a matter of removing all the old screening and measuring and replacing it with new extruded frames. For brand new screen porches, you can make new pressure treated wooden framing or, in many cases, just attach the heavy duty screen bar to existing columns and posts.

Aluminum Framed Enclosures

The do it yourself patio enclosure is often built the same way they were fifty years ago. With heavy wood 4x4 columns and 2x4 bracing to frame out the openings. The screen material is stapled in place onto cleats installed in the openings. Then the staples are covered up by a decorative molding.

Nowadays we have alternatives. Extruded porch screen bar is strong enough to make its own self supporting frame. Its much lighter than wood, never needs painting is easy to roll screen cloth into. It can also be installed with a minimum of tools.

The pictures show a house with an extruded aluminum screen porch with a sliding screen door installed. See how the frame posts are barely noticeable, not like they would be with a wooden frame screen porch.

Building around Brick, Wood or Steel Columns

If your house already has a patio that was constructed by the builder, but has no screens, putting extruded framing in is usually a simple way to finish off the porch. Simply drill holes in the extruded screen porch framing and screw it directly to the wooden framework surrounding the steel column. Or screw it into the brick or concrete using concrete screws.

You often dont have to build new structure to support a screen frame. You can easily attach to existing structure.
